It's fascinating to learn that when you ask adults who have truly overcome adversity what did they think was one of the most important things in their child through adolescense to help them to be resilient, to cope more effective, the first answer is that there was at least one person who truly believed in them and stood by them. A wonderful psychologist, Dr. Julius Siegel, called that person a charasmatic adult in a child's life and he defined charasmatic adult as an adult from whom a child or adolescent gathers strength. What I always say to parents, think about who are the charasmatic adults in your life. What did they say or do that you gathered strength from them and are you saying or doing some of the same things for your children? Because every child, even every adult needs people from whom they gather support because that is the strength that they can build upon to be resilient.
