Dads will very often face a greater challenge connecting emotionally because there's a big difference in our society in terms of how girls are raised and how boys are raised. From the time a little boy is very young, there's a message that society says, "Be tough." You know, a little boy falls down and scrapes his knee and is crying and crying, any man around will say, "It's not a big deal." "Shake it off. Be a little man." That same individual would be much more sympathetic if it were a little girl. They don't say to a little girl, "Shake it off. Be a little woman." Those are not the kind of comments. It is much more difficult for me to be comfortable at that emotional connection, particularly with young children. That is not necessarily what their background has been. I think if dads recognize that it's really okay to be emotional, to hug, to kiss, to laugh, to be silly; that's how you build that emotional connection. I think it becomes that much easier. I think the first step is recognizing that their whole parenting background was probably somewhat different. It's easier for moms because moms have been set up to be the nurturers. It is equally important to be nurturing. Little boys and little girls need nurturing from that dads as well as their moms.
