I would tell any new mom blogger who has their sights set on writing book or setting up a really successful website that it's hard work. I think people want instant gratification. They want that one viral blog post. They want to just be an overnight success. I started Scary Mommy 5 years ago. It was 3 years before I was making any money from it. And I really looked at it as a full-time job the whole time. And my husband would get so frustrated that I was addicted to this website, which had no financial gain whatsoever, but was really just a hobby. But I felt it had the potential to pay off. But it was work. It was a job. So you have to take it seriously. And visit other websites, become part of the community. There's a whole community of bloggers and mom bloggers who support one another. And it's strong and it's fierce and really immerse yourself in it. And be a cheerleader for those people. Because we have to celebrate one another's successes. There's enough room for everybody to have a great website, or a book, or a show. There are so many opportunities. So don't be jealous that so and so has gotten this and you want this, you want that. It isn't going to get you anywhere. Just celebrate one another's success that there will be something for you if you work hard and stay focused. I started Scary Mommy just as a blog. I didn't have my sights set on a book or a parenting community. it just happened organically, which I think is probably why it succeeded, because it's just me at the end of the day. I think if I really had wanted it to become something successful, it would have been calculated, and it wouldn't have been me. And I wouldn't have been able to keep up the facade. So I think really be yourself and don't try to be something that you're not. Because you'll lose interest. It's really hard to keep up that act. So just work hard and be yourself. It takes work, unfortunately. But that's what makes it so good.
