Strep throat is a bacterial infection, and is common in school age kids and most kids will complain of a sore throat, so also have a fever aches and pains, headaches and some swollen lymph nodes in their neck. Now when younger kid gets strep throat, they often won’t complain of a sore throat, they may complain of a headache, they may start throwing up or they may just be kind of tired and have a fever. So if you concern that your child may have picked up strep throat or they are complaining of a sore throat and have a fever, take them to the pediatrician, so they can check them for strep throat. If my office we do a rapid strep test, which is a quick little throat swab and it takes about 3 to 5 minutes to turn positive or negative. If your child does have a strep throat, they do need to be treated with anti-biotic and it’s very important to take the entire course of antibiotics that your doctor recommends. If strep throat isn’t properly treated, rarely there can be complications later in life such us rheumatic fever. So it is very important to always make sure you take all the antibiotics prescribed by your pediatrician.
