Very often I'm asked about chelation. People are interested in removing heavy metals from their child's body. First of all, you have to understand, not all children have been exposed to heavy metals. Some children are, and for those children might be a very important medical intervention that we can take. What we do is give them a medication that's designed to remove lead, mercury, or arsenic. By introducing that into their body, it actually goes around and claws it like a talons of an eagle, and pulls it out of their body. What we tend to do is, first of all, establish whether heavy metals might be a problem, and we can do that with some blood tests. If so, we can give them chelator that we choose, that we think the child will benefit from, and get a urine before the chelation, and get a urine after. What we are doing with the urine is showing, both to the physician and the parent, for example, we have this much lead coming out on a certain day, and after chelation, we get this much out. Then we know that the child does have an exposure to lead, and we can remove it. That's what chelation is all about, removing heavy metals from children.
