Having chemotherapy usually means your hair is going to fall out. This is possibly one of the most daunting things for a woman. We’re vain by nature and I think for a child to have to look at her mother with no hair – being bold – is probably pretty daunting and scary.
I chose to deal with it by… I brought my barber over to my house, we got out the clippers and we had a family gathering and we shaved it all off. And I made sure the children were a part of this process. One of my children thought it was hilarious and was running around, scooping up all the hair and stuffing in a little zip lock baggie. And the other one ran away crying, but I do think that it helped prepare them for the inevitable.
I also had this book, which my children would pour over, it has fabulous images of bold women looking amazing. I also explained to my children that we know the medicine is working and mommy is getting better. When your hair falls out, that’s a good sign. It’s a good thing for your hair to fall out – we know that the drugs are doing their job.
