What are genetically-engineered foods? Well, they are these new foods that were introduced into our food supply in the 1990's. They're brand new. They've never been used before, and because of these new characteristics and these new traits, they're actually patented by the US Patent and Trademark Office. In the United States, however, when they were introduced, they were never labeled, and countries around the world decided that this new technology, which really allows these chemical companies to engineer the seeds that our foods are grown from so that these crops can withstand increasing doses of their chemicals. Most countries around the world said, "Hey this is brand new. This has no long-term safety study, and we're going to label these things." But here in the United States, we took a different approach, and we introduced these foods into our food supply in the 1990's without labels.
