The thing about mommy guilt is that it's such a wasted emotion. No one benefits when you are at work feeling guilty about your kids. Or when you are with your kids and feeling guilty about work. So it's really something you want to avoid at all costs. Of-course at times we all feel mommy guilt. When I receive my daughter's first grade class photo, and I'd been traveling that day for work and I see her look like a ragamuffin, I've had mommy guilt stamped all over that. That photo is like a permanent reminder of my mommy guilt. But the bottom line is that no one benefits when you feel guilty. And to be a role model to your kids you really want them to see you passionate and enjoying and proud of your work. And then they'll be proud of you too. Mommy guilt is an area where we could all take a page from the men. When even the most devoted dads are without their kids, they are not sitting there worrying about them. And that is something we should do too. I was with a mom the other day who said to me, " When I'm across the country and I'm not with my kids, I'm not worried about them because there is nothing I could do at that moment to help." And obviously that is an extreme version of no mommy guilt. But, we can all use a little bit of a doze of that.
