I have two children, and I have learned that there is a value in creating one-on-one time with each child.
I normally can tell when that happens and when it's really needed, when there is discord in the family. When one child is complaining that "it's just not fair," or the other one is complaining about they don't get what they want, when they want it. It really doesn't make sense sometimes, when they are demanding, because of course they get what they need. They get a lot of time and energy from me.
What they are really craving from me is one-on-one focused time with mom. So I create that time, even if it's five minutes, ten minutes, twenty minutes; but I have to consciously create it, just me and that kid. I have to say, "So, what's going on? I hear you really frustrated about that." I just create a space for them to unload their feelings, whether they are rational or not, whether they make sense or not.
I create that time, and as soon as I do, it realigns the whole family dynamic.
