Explaining racism to a young child should start with very simple explanations about skin color, that different people have different skin colors. And that sometimes people don't like people who are different and that that's wrong. And then as your child gets older, you can introduce the term racism and what racism means, which is basically not accepting someone who has a different skin color than you do. And that it's wrong and racism is wrong, and we accept all types of people no matter what their skin color, no matter whether or not they're different than we are.

Christina Simon has a Bachelor of Political Science degree from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in urban planning from UCLA.
