Role models for mixed race children are extremely important, and the reason is that no child wants to feel like they are the only one or that they are different or, in some way, odd. And so by exposing your child to role models like themselves, you can foster really a healthy sense of self-esteem and self-awareness and identity. And the role models can be teachers, they can be artists, musicians, they can be the President, Barack Obama, who is mixed race and he's the leader of the free world. So that's a good place to start. But ultimately, role models for mixed race children are extremely important.

Christina Simon has a Bachelor of Political Science degree from UC Berkeley and a master’s degree in urban planning from UCLA. Christina is a past winner of the prestigious California State Senate Fellowship. She is a former vice president at Fleishman-Hillard, a global public relations firm. She is the mother of a son and a daughter who attend elementary school at The Willows Community School in Culver City.
