So when our children want to spend time with friends on the weekends and we prefer to have that dedicated family time, I think we need to be flexible. Children need to be able to have their social experiences with their peers. So maybe there is a way to modify that a little bit. Maybe you can carve out some dedicated family time and really have a conversation with your kids about why that’s important to you. And at the same time allow them to have some time with their friends. Some other options are to invite a friend to go on a family activity, so you’re still having your family do something, but your child gets to have a friend also. Another thing we’ve done as a family is get together with other families who have children who are friends with our children, so that, again, it’s not them going off for a play date, but we’re doing something with another family and they get to have that social interaction they need. My own experience is that as kids grow older – and I have a couple of teenagers – is that we really need to be flexible and take that family time when it comes. If my children, my older children, are home on a Friday afternoon or a Saturday night, I really try to optimize that time with them, because they’re more and more needing to be with their peers.
