It´s every parent´s worse nightmare to have to explain something traumatic to your child. When I was nine months pregnant, we had a house fire and we lost our home. And we lost our family dog, and I had to explain this to my two and half year old child. And life is random and cruel, and you want to protect your children from the harms of the world. And at two and a half, to have to begin to explain to them. It broke our hearts. The most important thing we did was take a few days, my husband and I. We needed to grieve. We needed to mourn. We needed to be out of control and we needed to be strong for our child. When we told him, it was okay to be sad and it was okay to cry. You just can´t be out of control because they depend on you to get them through this and you need to allow them to have an outlet for their emotions.
