It’s really difficult to deal with your own emotions when talking to your child. We had a house fire and we lost our dog and we had to tell our 2.5-year-old son. And one of the most important things that we needed to do was to be in control. It was okay for us to be sad – in fact, we told him. We said, “Mommy and daddy are very sad and that’s why we’re crying, but we want to tell you this important information.” And I did loose it, I had to go in the other room and my husband had to continue, because he needed to know that we were in control to allow him the ability to have his own emotion and his own reaction.

Juli is the mother of two beautiful sons – Jordan, age four, and Dailey, age one-and-a-half. In April of 2011, her home was destroyed in a house fire which also took the life of their beloved dog. Due to the stress caused by the fire, she ended up delivering her son Dailey by emergency c-section the same night. She and her husband Josh have recently moved back in to their rebuilt home, and are healing with the help of their sons who constantly keep them laughing.
