For a parent starting a divorce, I want you to know that things are happening exactly the way they should. It's the detours in your life that make your life more interesting. Although the divorce was the most painful, life-changing experience of my time, I found that it helped me grow in ways unimaginable. I've become a better mother, a physician, and most importantly, a person. It's allowed me to view the world not as black or white, but a grey area where I don't judge anyone, and I know there's a story behind what anyone is experiencing. What I've learned is that it's okay to fall; it's okay to fall flat on your face, but to get back up and ask for as many hands possible to help you. I've learned to laugh and to find humor in my situation. I've learned, most importantly, to realize that it's okay and you will be fine. Things that I would have done differently are not being angry and not overreacting. It's not a time to blame, but it's a time to focus on your child and make him or her the priority. Attorneys, they truthfully just exacerbate the situation and cause so much emotional rift between the two of you. Never bad-mouth the other parent; they love the child as much as you do. Never fight for custody; both of you are parents and both of you are equally important in the child's life. At the end of the day, the child needs both mother and father to love them and to co-parent effectively.
