We can reduce the barriers of gay and lesbian adopting beginning with the law.
Supporting gay marriage is a first step for supporting adoption for gay and lesbian couples. Even in jurisdictions where it is permissible for gay and lesbians to adopt, there are still some restrictions on second parent adoptions where one individual is not allowed to adopt the child of their partner. We need to change those laws.
We need to promote the positive values of gay and lesbians as parents. We need to have stories about gay and lesbian families in the media; on television and in magazines and in other ways in which people read about family life so this is normalized and people broadly understand that these are families like all other families.
