There are a lot of common things that parents can do to increase their own happiness and I think most parents know what they are already but it's really important to repeat those things, to emphasize that when you get enough sleep, 8 hours of sleep at night. You tend to feel a lot happier the next day, when we get exercise that really does contribute to our happiness. When we have a quite time to our ourselves for reflection or to meditate. Research shows that we will be more positive, and happier in our daily life. There are other things that aren't so common that we sometimes don't think of but that are just as effective in exercising in some ways. One thing would be, like practicing gratitude in a really conscious and daily way. To have a routine, to express your gratitude can make you a lot happier. Thinking of other people before ourselves often will make us happier so a small act of kindness can be a great instant happiness booster.

A sociologist and happiness expert at UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, Christine Carter, PhD is the author of Raising Happiness: 10 Simple Steps for More Joyful Kids and Happier Parents. Carter has been a keynote speaker at hundreds of events and professional groups. In 2010, she received an award from the Council on Contemporary Families for her outstanding science-based reporting on family issues. In 2011 she won Red Tricycle’s award for the “Most Awesome Parent Education,” and so far in 2012 she has been nominated for a Bammy Award and for an award from the American Sociological Association for public sociology.

Dr. Carter teaches parenting classes online throughout the year to a global audience on raisinghappiness.com. She lives with her family in Berkeley, CA.
