Should you comfort your toddler by lying down next to him? I don’t really recommend that, because that’s facilitating their sleep and it makes it more difficult when you’re learning how to… when he’s going to learn how to self-soothe. But if it’s something you’ve done in the past, that’s totally fine, don’t beat yourself up about it. There’s something that can be done to help you and that’s called a gradual retreat process. And that’s where you will lie down with him for two more nights and then you’ll tell him that you’re not going to lie with him anymore, you’re going to sit at the end of his bed. And then you will comfort him that way. You can touch his little leg. Stuff like that. And then he’ll fall asleep with you sitting at the end of the bed. And then you’ll sit in a chair next to his bed. And then he’ll fall asleep that way for 3 or 4 nights. And you’ll start moving the chair back towards the door gradually. It may take up to a month to get out of the room, but at least it’s more gentle and it’s going to cause less anxiety than any crying-it-out method. So that’s the way I’d go.
