Babyproofing Specialist Nancy Spigelman shares advice for parents on how and when to best baby proof your home

Transcription:
You want to start your baby proofing before your child becomes mobile. Kids are naturally curious and they gravitate towards what is ever easy for them to get into. If something is already locked up or covered, then they're just going to move on to whatever else their curiosity takes them to. So you want to get down on the baby's level, you want to look around. This would normally mean covering your outlet covers and putting corner guards on sharp-edged tables 'cause they're gonna start pulling themselves up. You want to put a hearth pad on your fireplace hearth that's usually hard brick or stone, that area. You might want to put a gate in your fireplace to keep your child from crawling into the fireplace. Another area that we do recommend for areas that are earthquake prone is to latch your upper cabinets as well as your lower ones and your drawers. Latching the upper ones is just to keep items from falling out. And that would protect anyone in the home besides the baby.
