Some of the semi-permanent birth control methods that are out there, one of them is Implanon.
Implanon is a little match-like stick. It is pliable. It goes into the arm. It has to be put into the arm by a doctor or healthcare provider. There are hormones on this particular stick. It goes into the arm and stays in the arm for up to three years to help protect against pregnancy. It does not protect against STDs. It is a method that individuals might like to use for longer term.
The other one that we have is the IUD. The IUD comes in two different forms. One of them has the hormone in it and it's called Mirena. It can prevent pregnancy for up to five years. We have another one that is called Paragard. Paragard can prevent pregnancy for up to ten years. Both of these have to be place into the uterus by a healthcare provider or by a doctor. Both of these methods depend on an individual. Some may really like it and some really don't. The thing that is good for longer term is the Paragard.
Some people who would benefit from these types of methods is somebody who has already finished having their family. We also see a lot of college age girls who are coming in to get these types of methods, because they are trying to finish their education or go on to grad school, whatever the case may be. It prevents them from having a family until they make that choice.
