So people ask me sometimes: When my child goes to college, how can I keep them from taking risks and partying too much? And what I say is that, much of that has already - the foundation has been laid by the parenting that you've done all this time. You really can't control what your children are going to do when they go away to college. What you can do is have a conversation. Let them know your expectations. Find out from them: What are your expectations for yourself? What are you going to do if your in a risky situation, and you don't feel comfortable? Help them create strategies for themselves so that when they get in that situation, they're able to act in the way that they want to act really. Always let them know that you are available, that any time they need you, day or night, they can call you. You will help them. I think it's so important for kids to know that they can reach out and get help from us as parents without major repercussions.
