Children talk and share with their parents when there's an environment that supports that. If the parent overreacts to anything that a child says, any kind of sharing, there will be no sharing, there will be no conversation. If parents interrupt, if parents don't listen well, what will happen is the child will stop talking and will look to talk to friends where it is a more pleasant interaction. I always felt that a very important parenting technique that I picked up is private sharing time, which I practiced on my own children. And private sharing time occurred every single day with each child where I went one-on-one with the child and listened. During that period the child could say whatever he or she wanted to say without being angry, without getting advice, without getting upset. So you create an environment so the child can talk whatever they need to talk about. And if, in fact, parents do that, they will find a communicative child.
