If your teen is raging and just erupting in rage and screaming and yelling and putting his hands up in the air, what you do is as little as possible. First, you do a framing statement. If the kid has been horrendous to you, you say, "son are you sure you want to talk to me like that?" If the kid says, "f'in hey it is." You say, "okay." Turn around. Walk away. Disengage. Engaging a raging teenager is like throwing gasoline on a raging fire. It will get worse and worse. Dads in particular, you will have to fight your biological instinct, a wired instinct to dominate this kid and take control of the situation. Turn and walk away. Dads feel like they're leaving the field of battle to the enemy when they do that. The research shows, the videos that we take show that after that explosion if dad can turn around and walk out, the kid is raging, screaming, and suddenly when dad's gone, he goes, ah. His head goes down in his hands. Fire's out. Go back in 30 minutes later. Knock on the door. "Yeah." "Can I come in and talk to you son?" "Yeah." You'll find a subdued child at that point. And then you say, "son, I don't know about you, but that was sort of sick for me. I hated that. how do we handle things so we never visit that kind of level of rage again?" If you get these things once a week, the real scary ones, the purple neck veins and so forth, get help. And if you see a trend where they seem to be getting worse and worse, where suddenly they take a step towards you, they block your path, they look like they might have hit you, same drill, disengage, go back in later, and say something like, "we need help;" not "you're crazy." You say something like, "son, I can see I can make you insane. I see I'm just making you crazy. We as a family need help so we don't go another step down this path."
