One of the biggest concerns of parents these days is we realize our kids are on a fast track and unfortunately, childhood can go by so quickly. Many of our kids are living in a kind of a really accelerated world, when they’re still getting out of the G-rated phenomenon. So here’s some points to keep in mind: number one, do your homework, which simply means flip through those TV stations and watch what’s being seen by your child, listen to the music lyrics. If you do and are aware of what’s going on in your child’s world, you’ll be able to put the brakes on and know what’s appropriate for you. Use developmental guidelines that are on the back of books, that are on the back of any kind of a video game, they’re certainly on the back of any movie. Why? Because those ratings were developed by child development psychologists who know kids well. Get on board with other parents who share your value system. When your child says, “Everybody else does, mom. Why aren’t you letting me?” You’ll be able to know, “No, sweetheart, Mrs. Jones doesn’t, because we’re on board together with this.” Childhood goes by quickly. Put the brakes on and make sure your child has a childhood with play and opportunity to decompress. And he’s learning skills that are at his level that he can appropriately handle and understand.
