We don't really know how many children or young adults are working as prostitutes right here in the United States because there has never been any kind of quantitative analysis. It would be so simple to send researchers into juvenile halls and adult detention facilities just simply to ask. But with all the talk about the human sex trafficking and prostitution, no one has bothered to do that. In the 80's, 40% of Children of the Night's clients were in fact boys and transgender youth. We know that there are many boys working as prostitutes. But the federal government has not focused on the exploitation of boys as prostitutes or sex trafficking victims because they find that distasteful. And quite frankly I don't think that the gay community would allow the federal government and federal investigators to treat the boy prostitutes the way that the girls have been treated and held in jails until they testify against their pimps. We don't know how many numbers there are of girls nor of boys. We do know that the girls are arrested and pursued by law enforcement. We know that the boys are living in the subculture - in a family setting where there is like a mom and a dad and lots of sexual exploitation and lots of prostitution going on with very little law enforcement intervention. As I've become aware of both of this cultures happening, I often ponder whether I should inform law enforcement about the boy prostitution because perhaps the boys are off without the federal government's involvement.
