If you think your child may be depressed, the most important thing is to get a good evaluation. Do whatever you have to do to get to the local person with the appropriate training and expertise. Talk to your pediatrician or your child´s family doctor. Talk to the guidance counselor at school or the school principal. Talk to other parents. Call a local university and ask for the child psychiatry department, but do whatever you have to do to get a really good evaluation because the evaluation really determines the kind of treatment that will be available and that you will decide to pursue. But don´t try to make the decision yourself. If you have it your head maybe my child is depressed, get it checked out because the good news is that this really is a treatable disorder. Unfortunately, for many kids, it goes on for a long time before they actually get the help that they need.
