Just as hormones are in charge of the physical changes in your body during puberty, they're also in charge of the emotional changes as well. But the big difference is that the physical changes happen very slowly and steadily over time; the emotional changes are kind of all over the map. A child may feel really happy one day and then very sad the next day. Or they may overreact to a situation one day that they're very calm in the face of another day. Most kids tell you they don't like how it feel to feel so emotionally turbulent, but it's hormones' fault – they change the way your brain responds to certain situations. The other piece is that as kids are growing up, our society asks them to take a little bit more responsibility, to be a little more independent. This, combined with hormones, can make it tough to be a teenager or a pre-teenager, a tweenager, some of the time. So remember that when your child is kind of all over the map emotionally, that's hormones. Tell your child what's going on, give them a break, give them a time-out, let them go take a little alone time, regroup and try it again.
