I've never met a happy self-injurer.
In other words, I think that people who self-injure are doing so because there is a tremendous discontent. Most of that discontent is an internal discontent. They are not happy with themselves, they don't feel like they are good enough. As a matter of fact, many self-injurers have said things like they are a black spot on a cancerous lung. They are devil incarnate. So it is not just a disliking of oneself, but a true hatred of oneself.
It really is more than just low self-esteem, but really not liking who they are or comfortable in one's own skin.
