Some people think that self-injury is merely habitual, that it’s just a bad habit that people have. And I want to caution that I don’t believe that. I do believe that if somebody is self-injuring, they are experiencing some emotional pain and that we need to take that very seriously. On the other hand, when somebody does engage in this behavior, it can be very easy for them to continue engaging in it. It works for them, it works well, and once something works for you, you’re going to engaging in it again, and again, and again. So it does take on an addictive-like or habitual quality.

An internationally recognized expert on the treatment of self-injury, she lectures extensively on the subject and is co-author of the book, Bodily Harm: The Breakthrough Healing Program for Self-Injurers as well as Self Injury: A Manual for School Professionals. In addition, she served as the expert for a training video on Self-Injury for the American Psychological Association. Dr. Lader is co- founder of the Self-Injury Foundation and a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Self-Injury.
