There is just an explosion of research coming out now about the effects of things like using media, like Internet surfing, and the effects on the brain. The bottom line is that we have a certain amount of brain plasticity and so the things that we do a lot of actually changes the functions and the structure of our brain. One example is in the area of Internet surfing. As some interesting research has shown that when we surf the Internet, we’re looking at a lot of different topics at a very superficial level. We don’t typically drill in deeply different topics, but we’ll scan quickly versus a textbook, where you’ll be looking at something – a topic or a subtopic – and you’ll be drilling deeper with the information and thinking more deeply about one topic. So that’s a real difference. And what they’re seeing when they wire up the brains of both adolescents and adults is that the brain starts to adapt to that Internet surfing kind of thinking, which is superficial and covers a lot of topics in a brief amount of time.
