Your child comes home, they were in a lockdown. You don't have any experience in this because the last thing you did when you were in school, was go under the table for an earthquake drill. What do you say to them? What do you do?
First you need to tell them that they are safe now, and that what happens in a lockdown is to keep everyone safe, and that they are surrounded with people that really want to keep them safe, but also to teach them how to keep themselves safe.
There are things that happen in this world, and you need to let them know that there is sometimes danger, but a lockdown is a practice in teaching themselves how to be safe.
Here's the unexpected thing about a lockdown, your children are seeing what it means for a community to come together to protect each other. That is a beautiful image, let them carry that one. They're carrying all these people with the every day that want to protect them. What could be better?
