For students who are artists or musicians, or actors, I kind of put them in 2 categories; one is the student who really want to go professional, who want t go to a conservatory. And that student, whether be in music or drama, those schools have a very specific set of requirements that if you simply look up in the application, you’ll usually go to an audition, you’ll usually send them an arts resume’ and you will usually submit samples of your work. The other type of student though – Let’s say a student who’d been taking photography for 2 years, may not want to be a photographer but might want to minor it in college. Could that student submit materials? It depends on the school. A lot of schools will take submissions. So for that photographer, schools will usually say, “Give us 10-15 of your best photographs, upload them via our website; sometimes you can send them in via slide, but nowadays it’s usually online, and it’ll become part of the evaluation process. So they want to see whether you have a talent that they can use at that school. Other schools - Harvard, the UC schools will take any submissions. So again, from a student and parent’s perspective, it’s really good to be proactive. Get on the website, pick-up the phone and call an Admissions Office and ask whether their school will accept the portfolio because it can help your child get in.
