When you have a child with disabilities, it’s important to remind yourself that there are things that you can find to enjoy. Just make sure that you don’t miss them, because they might be small. They could be something simple. Pronouncing a word correctly. Making eye contact with the person who’s speaking with. Remembering a safety matter – like looking both ways before crossing a street. Remembering to wipe their face after they eat – though I say that to my younger daughter sometimes. But, of course, I have a normal developing child, normal, typically developing, and a disabled child. I realized that there are so many things I take for granted with my younger daughter that I don’t with my older. And that’s really important. Don’t miss them. The moments.
