The "Drug Talk" With Kids If you are unsure of whether or not your child is abusing drugs, there are a number of behavioral signs that parents can look for. Author David Sheff explains “there are external things to look for including kids who aren’t eating, kids who are sleeping a lot or not sleeping at all, kids who are super, super anxious and sort of vibrating. Those are signs of drug use.” Sheff also shares that children who are using drugs may become more isolated and stay in their room more often. Sometimes as parents you will recognize a mood change and there is a “lightness” about your child that is now missing. While these signs can be hard to recognize, any of them could be indications that your child is involved with drug abuse. If your child is in fact using drugs, it is vital that you address the issue with him or her in the right way. Psychologist Michael J. Bradley explains that it is important to remain calm and patient with your child while talking with them about the problem. This is especially important if you catch your child in the act of using drugs. “Don't parent at 1AM,” advises Bradley. “It does not work… and it is also a great way to crank up the pressure on them and you'll be much smarter the next day.” Bradley encourages parents to remind children how much they love them and to have them make promises that it won’t happen again. However, if drug use persists it can become a much more serious issue for teen and parents to handle. “People can go from use to abuse without realizing it,” explains author Karen Khaleghi. In this case, more rigorous steps need to be taken to prevent continuous harm. Substance abuse expert Dan Cronin suggests, “Once a parent becomes aware that their child is having problems with drugs or alcohol, it is imperative that they seek professional help immediately.” Professional help can be found through therapy and in some cases rehabilitations centers can help your child get back on the right track and avoid future relapses.
