Transcription:
A normal umbilical cord has two arteries and one vein. The two vessel umbilical cord has one artery and one vein. This is typically diagnosed in the second trimester by ultrasound. With a two vessel umbilical cord, we often see an increased risk for liver, kidney, gastrointestinal abnormalities of the fetus. It is important to make certain that none of these structural abnormalities are seen. Also, there is an increased risk for chromosomal abnormalities. If the diagnosis is made, potential fetal complications are related to preterm labor, intrauterine growth retardation and any other problem related to a structural chromosomal abnormality related to the fetus.
