While you’re in the NICU, you’ll find yourself able to make a lot of decisions about the treatment that your child will receive. Some of those treatments are very aggressive and sometimes those decisions are based around whether or not you should withdraw care from your child.
When you’re facing those decisions, you need to remember that you are not alone in that decision. You have a team of doctors and nurses who have done this many, many times. But you should also remember that this is your child and you know your child better than anybody else, whether you’ve known that child for hours, or days or months. You know your child and you know whether or not it’s appropriate to be pursuing aggressive treatment or whether or not it’s time to withdraw that care. Please, know that you just need to trust yourself and that you need to be able to have confidence in your decision.
Please, also know that others may question your decision and you don’t need to pay attention to what they say at all. You’re making that decision for your child. Research it. Talk to other premature parents. Talk to the doctors – they have plenty of experience. But ultimately, those decisions will come down to you and you need to know when the time comes that you’re making that right decision. And you will.
