What is intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)?

IUGR is an abbreviation for Intrauterine Growth Restriction. Like most medical diagnosis', it sounds scarier than it is. The way my doctor explained it to me is that, late in my pregnancy -- with me, it was around week 33 -- something went wrong with my placenta. Because the blood flow was restricted, his growth was restricted. The good news is, once it was diagnosed, my doctor was completely on top of things and he was able to monitor it. When it was safer for him to be outside, rather than in, my doctor was able to deliver him. He was completely healthy, just a little bit small.
