Chorioamninitis is a condition involving infection in the uterine cavity involving the fetus and the fetal membranes. It is caused by bacteria from the vagina that ascend into the uterus and create this infection. We tend to see it in women who have prolonged labors. Symptoms include temperature of 100.4, uterine tenderness, maternal and fetal tachycardia and foul smelling discharge from the uterus. If this is diagnosed, delivery is imminent. Antibiotics are always started and for premature fetuses corticosteroids are given to help with lung maturity. If a woman is already in labor and chorioamninitis is happening, antibiotics are given so that the infection isn´t escalated.
