I think that dads need to understand that they are a prime target in the delivery room.
What happens is, your partner is most comfortable with you, so they are not going to take it out on their doctor. They are not going to take it out on the nurse that they just recently met. They are going to take it out on somebody they feel comfortable with that is not going to run away. You just need to be respectful of the fact that whatever this person is going through is new to them, even if its their second baby. You need to understand that you are going to be a target, and it's not meant to be at you.
The most important thing that a partner can be in the delivery room is to be supportive. Be there. When asked to do something, do it.
