Fetal distress in labor and delivery is quite common. Every time there is a variation on a fetal heart rate, this could be interpreted as fetal distress. Severe fetal distress, however, is not common. The fetal monitoring, which is common to use over the last 30 years, has allowed us to diagnose fetal distress, which is both good and bad. It is good to be able to diagnose the baby that is at some jeopardy where we can change maternal position or do interventions that might be helpful for the baby. But it is not good in that that it’s sometimes overdiagnosed, leading to interventions that would not have to be done otherwise.
