In our culture, we're seeing a lot of precocious puberty. Young girls are sometimes getting their period as young as 8, 9 and 10. Now, in our past, we got having our periods beginning at around the age of 19 or 20. Partly this is because we're evolving as a species. We're eating better, becoming stronger and developing earlier. But these girls are not anymore emotionally prepared for what's happening just because their bodies are surging ahead. There are 3 things that I think is affecting this precocious puberty and you can have an effect on it on yourself. The first is an over exposure to media or even any sexual media. What happens is if girls are seeing naked images, and these days every bus that goes by has an ad for clothes where no one's wearing any clothes. But what you can do is try to limit the amount of highly sexual content that your child is seeing, or even lightly sexual because it sends a message through the eyes to the occipital lobe on to the pituitary gland that they're out in the field now ready to reproduce, and they've left the nest. The other thing is watch the hormones in the food. There's been some talk that maybe foods have been given a lot of female hormones to grow, like some of our chicken, are getting into our system. And the third thing, of course, is to make sure your girls exercise and keep their body fat down because body fat raises estrogen levels and can bring on early puberty. Most of all, let your girl be a girl. Let her do sports. Let her learn about all the things she can do with her mind in life. Don't rush the body part.
