It's incredibly important to get your child to try something challenging. This is the way they learn. This is the way they stretch themselves. This is the way they discovered their passions that they never knew they had. In a fixed mindset, kids are afraid to learn something new. They would rather do the same thing over and over and keep being successful, keep looking smart; or at least not dumb. What we know now, by pushing yourself, you are constantly growing in ways you never anticipated and you fulfill your potential. The most successful people were and are the people who push out of their comfort zone, growing their skills.

Carol S. Dweck, PhD, is a leading researcher in the field of motivation and is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Stanford. Her research focuses on why students succeed and how to foster their success. More specifically, her work has demonstrated the role of mindsets in success and has shown how praise for intelligence can undermine students’ motivation and learning.
