Premature babies have different skin that full term babies in a very significant way. Skin is one of the very last organs to complete its process in gestation. So a week, 4 days, 2 days makes a huge difference in the development of baby's skin. A full term baby's skin will already be 5xs thinner than adult's skin. The sebaceous glands that produce oil won't be producing as much oil. They're extra sensitive to UV rays. There are all these differences. But a preemie baby, because it hasn't had that last week is especially vulnerable to things like proteins in products, altered pH in products, and harsh chemicals. It can easily tear. And it needs a couple of key things to protect it. One is to be cleansed very simply with no rubbing at all. And the other is to support the barrier, to allow it to complete its process of development so it can thicken without tearing. And they're very susceptible to diaper rash. Often preemie babies are supplemented with formula and they're on antibiotics. Those two factors can increase the factors of diaper rash exponentially. So it's important to be prepared with rash protection, a healthy wash, and a good lotion to make sure that skin is protected.
