I think the most helpful thing that anybody can do for a for a mom with postpartum depression is to be supportive. It doesn't mean that you have to know the right thing to say; sometimes you don't need to say anything at all. Sometimes just sitting with someone and holding their hand, and not trying to convince them all the reasons why they should feel better about themselves is a good thing. Just allowing her to go through this, because trust me, it's not going to go away tomorrow. Postpartum depression is the kind of illness that really does a while to get over. And so if you can show her that you are there for the long haul, and you're going to sit there and hold her hand and go for a walk with her, and take the baby when she needs it if you can, those are amazing things and they will go a long way to assisting her in her recovery. So it's not always knowing the right thing to say; it's just being there and showing that you love her and you're going to stick around and help her get through it. It's really important.
