Cradle cap, otherwise known to doctors as seborrheic, is a condition of the scalp that occurs in infants. Usually, it presents in the first several months of life with scaling or crusting on the child’s scalp. It is purely a cosmetic issue and I always reassure parents that it never leads to any serious medical complications. The biggest problem is usually when the mother in law or a grandmother is coming to visit and the mother wants to make sure their child’s head and scalp looks appropriate. So at that time we’ll reassure them and instruct them that they could use some normal baby shampoo. It is helpful to mix in a small amount of baby oil and to use the soft fleshy parts of your finger to gently massage the scalp to help remove some of the scales and crust. And alternative is to use a soft brush. But never ever be too violent or harsh with your child’s scalp. A last alternative would be – Neutrogena makes a product called T-gel which is a scalp conditioner. And I have found in my experience that that’s often a useful product that families can use.
