Unfortunately, the majority of children that are sexually abused in this country are sexually abused by a known adult. Also unfortunately, it's status quo in the United States to tell your children to obey adults. And I think we need to rethink that policy. What children should do much more than obey an adult is trusting their instincts. If somebody's telling them to do something that they don't feel is right, they need to put a stop to that immediately by either screaming or putting as much distance between themselves and that person as they possibly can. They then need to go to a trusted authority and tell that authority, whether it's their parents, some other caregiver, or even somebody in law enforcement what has occurred and what their concerns are, so that a stop can be put to it immediately. The last thing any child needs in this country is to become a serial victim. And unfortunately that's what happens far too often. So parents need to be aware, children need to be aware, and organizations that hire individuals that have unsupervised access to children need to be doing comprehensive background checks on those individuals so known threats can be eliminated in the first place.
