Another question parents sometimes ask is what kind of goals should kids set or should they set goals? And the answer is sure they should for any outcome they want to achieve. For example they might set a goal to improve their math score from 60 to 70 in the 2 months or 70 to 80; or their spelling score from 5 out of 13 to 12 out of 13. They might set a goal to save money for something they want to buy like a new piece of software. In all cases, it's important to track your goals through measurement so this is mathematics, I'll track your goals with numbers. Set a deadline, how long do you want to give yourself to set it and how well are you accomplishing that each day? Have a time limit, for example, for doing your math drills, you say, "I'm going to finish all my math drills, in the next hour i'm going to be done with it. I'm going to do my spelling drills, I'm going to be done with those in the next 20 minutes and I'm going to get a better score tomorrow, I'm going to set a goal to set a goal to improve on my score. So any number of things; anything you want to achieve, you can set a goal for it. Make sure the goal is clear, make sure the goal has a deadline and that you measure your progress.

Edwin A. Locke, PhD, is Dean's Professor (Emeritus) of Leadership and Motivation at the R.H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park.
