Learning to trust yourself is a challenge, especially as a parent. And I have found in my own life that growth rarely happens during the easy times. In my experience, it’s those challenges of parenting, the hard times, that really teach you to trust yourself, because it’s just too easy to just sort of coast on how everything is going. So I would say when you’re in a hard place with your family and it seems to be a struggle, know that that is the time when you’re actually learning the most about parenting and you’re probably learning the most about yourself. I think the other important thing to remember is that it’s true that other people will judge you based on your children’s behavior. They judge you. And it doesn’t matter, because what your children do and who they become isn’t really about you. It’s about them. That’s not to say that your parenting doesn’t have an effect on them. Obviously it does, but I think it’s also important to recognize that they are becoming who they are meant to become and that you’re guiding them and helping them, but you’re not determining what that is. So that judgment that you may feel at times, it doesn’t apply and it’s really not something that you need to worry about as a parent, even though it doesn’t feel great.
