Social and emotional intelligence is I think sometimes better thought of as social and emotional literacy in that it's a skill that we want to teach our kids and practice with them. Because emotional intelligence or social intelligence or social and emotional literacy really is the foundation of a happy and meaningful life. We need to be able to understand our own emotions and the emotions of other people and respond to them appropriately in order to connect with them, to have relationships – all the things that are really important to leading a happy life. And parents can really teach their kids social and emotional literacy just the same way we would teach them to read. So when we're teaching kids to read, we teach them to recognize high-frequency words first. And we can do the same thing with little kids – we can teach them how to recognize high-frequency emotions. So simply by saying, "I can see that you're feeling angry or you're feeling really joyful right now." Just giving them the words that they need to identify emotions is the first step.
