High fructose corn syrup is made from corn and has been linked to diabetes and other health issues. It’s important to avoid it, because the corn that it’s made from is typically genetically modified. In order to avoid it the most important thing is to read labels and to choose products that don’t include high fructose corn syrup. And high fructose corn syrup is found in many, many products that are on the shelf that you wouldn’t even suspect from, you know, sports drinks to sodas to cereal and even, you know, granola bars – things that you think might be good for you. If you can, for certain things choose organic, because high fructose corn syrup is not allowed in organic products. Particularly for children one simple switch is really ketchup. So for example, conventional ketchup has high fructose corn syrup, but the same brand in the organic version does not. So those are some of the tips when thinking about how to avoid high fructose corn syrup.
